ARMY COMMUNITY SERVICES MOB CENTER / SHELBY VICTIM ADVOCACY PROGRAM

Minimum time required of volunteer(s): 6 hours per week

CENTER FOR THE PREVENTION OF CHILD ABUSE
Our mission is to prevent child abuse, neglect and family violence by improving the quality of life for children and families in south Mississippi through effective implementation of prevention, education and intervention programs.

Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. 

Age Requirement: 20 years and up

Volunteer Activities: Parent Aide volunteers conduct weekly home visit to a family to assist in teaching parenting skills & achieving parenting goals. 16 hour training course provided when volunteer starts. Ongoing in-service trainings provided.

Holiday Projects: Adopt a family and purchase Christmas presents and food baskets; Blue ribbon campaign in April which is “Child Abuse Prevention Month.”

Evening or Weekend Projects: Community awareness events (occasionally).

DOMESTIC ABUSE FAMILY SHELTER, INC.
Provides emergency shelter up to 90 days and provides a broad range of services to victims of domestic violence, their children, and abusers in 11 counties, including Hattiesburg.

Age Requirement: 18 years and up

Volunteer Activities: Shopping, answering the crisis line, data entry, yard work, work individually with clients, assist with group activities, provide child care services, assist with special events, and tutor children (Individuals trained in nonresidential counseling, after-care case management, and victim advocacy experience needed.)

Material Needs: Office and school supplies, personal hygiene articles, paper products, cleaning supplies, linens, dishes, glasses, cookware, light bulbs, diapers, school supplies.

Holiday Projects: Adopting families, purchasing gifts for shelter residents, financial assistance for those strapped during the Christmas season. 

Evening or Weekend Projects: Arts and crafts, recreation for clients and 
children. DAFS needs the wooden fence rebuilt/repaired and water-treated. This could be done by a group on a weekend but prefer during the week. Also a group could redo/remodel one of the rooms at the shelter.

Other Information: Volunteers are required to be respectful of others and mature. Background checks are requested on all volunteers with law enforcement and the Child Abuse Central Registry.
SHAFER CENTER FOR CRISIS INTERVENTION
Provide support, counseling, referral, and information to victims of all types of sexual assault, their families, and friends (The center also provides services to families and friends of homicide victims.)

Hours of Operation: Central office, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. 

Age Requirement: 18 years and up

Volunteer Activities: Work individually with clients by assisting with a 24-hour crisis line and by providing in-person support to victims of sexual assault and their families in local emergency rooms; Need volunteers to answer the 24hr hotline, center also needs clerical assistance

Material Needs: Loose clothing and under garments for victims to wear home from the hospital (new items only), arts supplies and small toys for the children
SOUTH MISSISSIPPI CHILDREN’S CENTER
An emergency shelter for abused, neglected, and homeless youth ages 10-17 (The center also runs Project Safe Place, an outreach program for youth in crisis)

Volunteer Activities: Assist with recreational outings, assist with educational activities, help with decorating guest rooms and maintaining house

Material Needs: Office and school supplies, personal hygiene articles, paper products and canned foods

Holiday Projects: Halloween activities, Thanksgiving outings and activities, Christmas wish list, Easter outings and activities

Evenings: Outings for residents for recreational and educational purposes

Family and Group Projects: Teaching group skills and crafts

Training: Provided; background check required

Other information: We are required to conduct various background and medical checks. Volunteers must commit to 40 hours per six month period and volunteer at regularly scheduled times (for example, every Thursday at 2pm).
