PETAL SCHOOL DISTRICT CENTER FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES 
To provide or link families with the resources and support services they need to be their child’s first and best teachers. Programs include: Resource loan library, Parents as teachers, Newborn Packet Project, Even Start Family Literacy, Adult Education, Community Workroom, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Extended School, Kid’s Health Fair, School District Volunteer Program.

Volunteer Activities: Two 10-week sessions per year, beginning in February and September: Assist teachers, tutor/encourage students, assist with field trips on Fridays, mentoring, participant follow up, job search, participant recruiting, leading devotionals, coordinating activities

Material Needs: book bags, notebooks, paper, pens, journals, index cards, stamps, note cards, inspirational posters, inspirational pocket cards

Family and Group Projects: One family activity is planned for each session (one in the fall and one in the spring)

Evening or Weekend Projects: weekly Bible studies; teachers for evening or weekend classes; participant follow up; family activities

Minimum time required of volunteer(s): As little or as much as one wishes to volunteer. Mentors must be willing to commit to one year of service with 2 hours a week.

Volunteer Activities: Adult Education Tutor/Teacher (There will be hands on training conducted by the volunteer coordinator before volunteers start their service duty) Clerical: conduct various clerical tasks including data entry, word processing, copying, etc. ( attention to detail, ability to work independently, willingness to accept supervision, and written communication and computer skills needed)

Volunteer Activities: Work individually with clients (tutoring and mentoring), supervise and assist with group activities and games, provide child care services

Family and Group Projects: Special events such as award days and field trips

MISSISSIPPI RURAL CENTER
Serves senior citizens, families, and youth groups in literacy; provides computer labs, arts and crafts, and at-risk classes for area youth. (The center serves as a vehicle for social change, encourages religion as well as personal enhancement, and serves as a community family.)

Volunteer Activities: Reading, literacy, computer lab, recreation, arts and crafts; Tutor/mentor: help children maintain and improve grade averages at school (Work experience with children preferred but not required.) 

Material Needs: Markers, pencils, notebook paper, arts & crafts supplies.

Evening or Weekend Projects: Scouts meet on Monday & Wednesday afternoon; After-school tutoring and mentoring program.

Family and Group Projects: Interested in adults who could help plan scouting activities for our boys and girls. 

Holiday Projects: Our children participate in Christmas parades, Martin Luther King Day parades and fall festivals (Halloween).

PINE BELT EDUCATION SERVICE CENTER
ADULT AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION OFFICE

Provides literacy training, including low-level reading and math, at no cost to the participants; one-on-one certified instructors; provides adult basic skills, GED preparation, family literacy, early childhood education, and parenting skills, ESL classes; job training classes; employability skills workshops, etc.
